Victorian publisher’s binding on Rip Van Winkle (Macmillan and Co, 1893)

The cover design is unsigned, but it was possibly George Henry Boughton (1833-1905), illustrator of book. Boughton was born in Norwich, England, moving at the age of three to Albany, New York. In 1862 he returned permanently to England (London) and over the next 42 years he exhibited 87 pieces at the Royal Academy. He illustrated several works by American writers, including this work by Washington Irving.

Today’s birthday April 3rd 1873 : Washington Irving, who is best known for his short stories “Rip van Winkle (1819) and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” (1820)
